Gatherings of artists have always been significant in the history of art, often changing the course of a discipline or bringing new vitality to a continuing artistic expression.
"Raku Summit: Origins, Impact and Contemporary Expression" May 25 to June 5, 2005, was just such an international gathering of professional artists committed to Raku ceramics. The objective of this symposium was to provide a collaborative environment for experimentation and philosophical exploration, toward the development of new potentials in Raku. Led by Jim Romberg, this twelve day event took place at Eagleheart Center for Art and Inquiry, a 400 acre stone ranch and studio tucked into the red canyons of Western Colorado.
The participating artists, invited from Japan, Taiwan, France, Switzerland, U.K. and the U.S.A., are the modern links to the ancient 16th century Japanese tradition from which contemporary Raku ceramic sculpture has developed. It was during this symposium that the collaboration of these artists produced experimental works comprising a collection unique to the history of international ceramic art.
Proceeds from the sale of these collaborative pieces, as well as those provided from each artist's personal body of work, together comprising this international exhibition, will fund the "Legacy Arts in Education Program", designed to bring experiential arts learning into our public school core system. Developed by the Lynette Jennings Foundation: Art for Life, the objective of this educational program is to teach our children to "see", to promote analytical thinking in all other areas of learning, and to engage the hand/heart connection for life. These concerns were discussed at length during the Raku Summit, a testimony of the needs for art in society internationally.
